It is semi-evergreen, keeping much of its foliage through winter before shedding it in early spring as new leaves emerge. A popular shade tree for parks, large gardens, roadsides and naturalised landscapes, it also supports birds, squirrels and other wildlife with its acorns.

At a Glance

Plant type: Semi-evergreen tree

Life cycle: Perennial

Growth rate: Fast

Mature height: 40–60 ft (12–18 m)

Spacing: 25–40 ft (7.5–12 m)

Acorns: Small, about ½ in (1.2 cm)

Light: Full sun

Water: Moderate; drought-tolerant once established

Soil: Adaptable; well-drained to moist

Hardiness: USDA zones 7–10

Container growing: Seedlings only

Seeds per packet: 100

How to Sow

Acorns lose viability if they dry out, so sow them as soon as possible after they arrive, or store them in a sealed bag of slightly damp sand in the refrigerator. Laurel oak acorns need a cold period to germinate: sow them outdoors in autumn and let winter provide it, or chill them in the refrigerator for 4–8 weeks before sowing in spring. Plant acorns 1–1½ inches (2–4 cm) deep, on their side, in loose, well-drained soil in a sunny spot or in deep pots, and water gently. Protect seedlings from squirrels, pests and grazing animals.

How to Grow

Plant young trees in full sun with plenty of room for the mature canopy, away from buildings and underground pipes. Water regularly during the first year, then the tree becomes moderately drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Oaks develop a deep taproot and dislike being moved, so transplant seedlings to their permanent position while still young. Prune only to shape the tree or raise the canopy.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0710/3335/6471/files/freepik__the-style-is-candid-image-photography-with-natural__55601.png?v=1768880796
https://organicseedshub.com/products/laurel-oak-seeds-quercus-laurifolia-fast-growing-semi-evergreen-shade-tree-acorns
