How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly in warm soil (after last frost / when soil is warm) or in small seedbeds. Use well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.
Sow seeds about 2.5 cm deep (or as per packet — about 1 inch) in soil or mound.
Space plants about 90–120 cm (3–4 ft) apart; if planting rows, keep row spacing about 2–3 m for vines in field conditions.
Provide strong support structure (trellis, fence, poles) if you want vines to climb.

How to Grow

Plant in full sun, in loamy, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
Keep soil consistently moist — bottle gourd requires regular watering, especially during fruit development.
Ensure good air circulation and support for vines; if grown on ground, use mulch to prevent fruit rotting.
Monitor for pests and diseases (common gourd pests / fungal issues), practicing crop rotation or organic control when needed

Tips

For small gardens or balconies — use trellis + container planting to save space and improve yield.
Harvest gourds when young & tender (before skin thickens) for best taste and texture.
Provide sturdy support as vines grow long.
Maintain soil fertility with compost and mulch to feed heavy-bearing vines.

Bottle Gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) is a widely cultivated warm-season vine crop belonging to the Cucurbit family. It grows rapidly under warm, humid conditions and produces long, light-green gourds that are eaten while tender and green. With broad leaves and climbing habit, the vine benefits from trellis or support, but can also spread on the ground if space allows. Gourds are nutritious, hydrating and versatile in cooking — commonly used in curries, soups, stir-fries and stews. The plant is relatively low-maintenance, but benefits from good soil, sunlight, support, and regular watering. Ideal for home gardens, backyard plots or balcony gardens.
