How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly outdoors where plants are to flower — do not cover seeds heavily; very light or surface sowing is best.
Best sowing time: early spring or previous autumn / late fall, depending on climate.
After sowing, gently press seeds and keep soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge (approx. 10–20 days at moderate temperatures).

How to Grow

Provide full sun for best flowering performance.
Grow in well-drained soil; poppies tolerate a variety of garden soils provided drainage is good.
Once established, water moderately; avoid overwatering.
After flowering, leave seed-pods for dried-flower interest or harvest for ornamental use.

Tips

Scatter seeds thinly over soil for a natural, meadow-like effect — avoid dense sowing which can lead to poor flowering and competition.
Use in mixed colour beds — the fiery reds/oranges contrast beautifully with blues, purples or pale foliage plants.
Because this poppy is annual, consider sowing small patches each year for continuous blooms or allow self-seeding (where allowed) for naturalized growth.

Annual Flower

Papaver somniferum ‘Summer Blaze’ is an ornamental poppy valued for its bright, papery blooms and airy elegance. When sown directly into the garden, it produces slender, silvery-green foliage and sends up tall, graceful stems bearing bold red to orange flowers. Because of its striking floral display and ease of growth, it’s a favourite for cottage-style gardens, wildflower meadows, and summer borders. In addition, once flowers fade, the unique seed-pods add structural interest to dried arrangements.
